Ice Melting (IM)

The Ice Melting test is designed to evaluate the ice melting performance of SAE AMS 1431 and AMS1435 runway and taxiway de/anti-icing products. The test utilizes a sheet of ice of uniform thickness frozen in a flat circular polystyrene Petri dish. After equilibration to the desired temperature, a weighed quantity of the deicing product is distributed over the surface of the ice. Generated brines are removed, and the mass of melted ice is calculated. IM procedure is in accordance with AIR6170, as per AMS1431 (3.2.10) and AMS1435 (3.2.12).

Ice Undercutting (IU)

The Ice Undercutting test is designed to evaluate the ice undercutting capability of SAE AMS 1431 and AMS1435 runway and taxiway de/anti-icing products. The test utilizes small cylindrical cavities in a sheet of ice of uniform thickness. After equilibration to the desired temperature, a known volume of dyed-liquid deicer is placed in the cavities. Undercutting is evidenced by the formation of essentially circular undercut patterns. The undercut area is defined as the total area of the circular undercut pattern minus the area of the original cavity. IU procedure is in accordance with AIR6172, as per AMS1431 (3.2.10) and AMS1435 (3.2.12).

Ice Penetration (IP)

The Ice Penetration test is designed to evaluate the ice penetration capability of SAE AMS 1431 and SAE AMS 1435 runway and taxiway de/anti-icing products. This test utilizes small glass test tubes filled with ice. After equilibration to the desired temperature, a known volume of dyed-liquid deicer is poured onto the surface of ice cones and penetration commences. At specified time intervals, the length of penetration is measured. IP procedure is in accordance with AIR6211, as per AMS1431 (3.2.10) and AMS1435 (3.2.12).
